Overview

The SSAS measures the extent of self-awareness in the present moment. It has successfully been translated into French, Chinese and Indonesian.

Scoring & Interpretation

The Situational Self-Awareness Scale is a 9-item measure of 3 areas of self-awareness (made up of three items per area): public self-awareness, private self-awareness, and awareness of the immediate surroundings. Each item is a statement, and the respondent indicates their agreement with the statement on a scale of 1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly agree). Subscales are scored by summing each of the relevant items.

Internal Consistency

Internal consistency was acceptable, with Cronbach's alpha for public self-awareness = .82, for private self-awareness = .70, and for awareness of immediate surroundings = .72

Factor Structure

A principal component analysis confirmed the three factors: public self-awareness, private self-awareness and awareness of immediate surroundings.
