Developmental Differences in Children’s Use of Rating Scales

Examining the effect of age (5-12yrs) on Likert scale responses.

Exploring evidence that younger children are more likely to respond at the more extreme ends of Likert scales (rather than reporting a graded approach to their experience), this study of 60 children found that younger children had more extreme scores on social and subjective task but not on a task assessing physical quantities.  The authors found that even the oldest children (i.e. age 12) reported elevated levels of extreme scores of the subjective scale (how they feel) and advise researchers and clinicians to take this into account when interpreting children’s self-reporting ratings.
