Designing and Scaling Up Integrated Youth Mental Health Care

Gorry et al. (2022) outline a global framework for developing integrated, youth-focused mental health services that address the unique needs of adolescents and emerging adults.

The authors argue that mental ill-health in young people represents a major global public health challenge that requires substantial reform of existing healthcare systems. They advocate for accessible, integrated, youth-friendly mental health services that span the critical developmental period from approximately 12 to 25 years of age. Central features include early intervention, co-design with young people, digital support, and seamless pathways between primary and specialist care. Overall, the paper presents integrated youth mental health care as a scalable and evidence-informed model that has the potential to improve outcomes while reducing the long-term social and economic burden of mental illness.
