Clinical Trajectories in the Ultra-High Risk for Psychosis Population

Polari et al. (2018) examine the range of clinical outcomes experienced by young people identified as being at ultra-high risk for psychosis.

The authors developed and applied clear definitions of remission, recovery, recurrence, relapse, and transition to psychosis to better understand clinical trajectories in an ultra-high-risk population. Their findings showed that outcomes were highly diverse, with many individuals experiencing persistent difficulties despite not transitioning to psychosis. Longer duration of untreated symptoms and higher levels of depression were associated with poorer outcomes. Overall, the study highlights the importance of considering a broader range of recovery pathways beyond psychosis prevention alone.
