Moving Psychological Theories Forward

An introductory article on the importance and challenge of good theories in psychological research and practice.

This article sets out some of the key challenges in psychological theory development, including: insufficient knowledge of robust phenomena to allow predictions or testing theory, lack of attention on improving and validating psychological constructs, and the difficulty in identifying psychological causes. The article outlines key recommendations for addressing these concerns including: “phenomena driven research”, the importance of clearly and transparently defined concepts, and cautious use of complex statistical and computational models.
