This article describes an approach to constructing a psychological theory. The sequence of five steps includes: 1) identify the phenomenon, 2) generate a prototheory to explain the phenomenon, 3) construct a formal model, 4) test the explanatory adequacy of the model, and 5) assess the overall adequacy of the theory to predict and explain the key phenomena.
