Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) and Experience Sampling Methods (ESM) Description

Introduction to Ecological Momentary Assessment and Experience Sampling Method.

Ecological Momentary Assessment and Experience Sampling Method both have an idiographic approach to research, using the collection of real (or near) time self-reports or other indices of behaviour, thoughts, or emotions in the daily lives of the participants. Data is usually collected using digital devices. Experience Sampling Method is a research technique used to collect data about individuals’ behaviours and experiences in real time. Experience Sampling Method, focuses on ecological validity and participants reports in an environmental context.
