Age range 7 — 18
Completion time 5-10 Minutes
Respondent Self Report
Problem areas
Anxiety

Overview

A self-report questionnaire assessing trait self-consciousness in youth, capturing: Public self-consciousness, Private self-consciousness and Social anxiety. Revised from earlier child and adult self-consciousness scales. Developed to address the lack of validated youth measures of self-consciousness.

Scoring & Interpretation

The RSCS-C is scored by summing each of the items in their relevant subscale: Public Self-Consciousness, Private Self-Consciousness, and Social Anxiety. Respondents rate items from 1 ("Strongly Disagree") to 5 ("Strongly Agree"), with higher scores indicating higher levels of that specific self-consciousness trait.

Psychometric Properties

Internal Consistency

Internal consistency for all subscales was good (Public Self-Consciousness: α = .84, Private Self-Consciousness: α = .79, Social Anxiety: α = .89).

Test-Retest Reliability

Test retest reliabilty at 2 weeks was strong (Public SC: r = .74, Private SC: r = .71, Social Anxiety: r = .80).

Factor Structure

The three-factor model achieved good model fit (CFI .95; TLI .94; RMSEA: .05; SRMR: .05).

Validity

Convergent and divergent validity was supported.

Measurement Invariance

Configural and metric invariance was supported across gender (boys/girls) and age (7–12 vs 13–18).
